Diplomatic vehicle in Switzerland: what should you watch out for when buying or selling
Vehicle inspection in Switzerland is a mandatory procedure carried out periodically to assess the technical condition of the vehicle and ensure its safety on the road. The inspection is performed by a technical control body approved by the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Here's what is generally checked during this inspection:
Safety Features: Experts check the vehicle’s safety features, including seat belts, braking systems, signal lights, mirrors, and tire condition.
Pollutant Emissions: Vehicle emissions are checked to ensure they comply with current environmental standards. This often includes an exhaust gas emissions test. Since late 2023, particular attention has been given to particulate filters (DPF), especially in diesel engines; failure to meet this requirement can lead to high repair costs.
Lighting: The operation of headlights, brake lights, indicators, and other lighting systems is checked to ensure they function properly and provide adequate visibility.
Chassis and Structure: The condition of the chassis, bodywork, and vehicle structure is inspected for corrosion, deformation, or damage that may compromise safety.
Electronic Systems: Vehicle electronic systems, such as the onboard computer, traction control, and active safety systems, are tested to ensure they are working correctly.
Engine and Transmission: The performance of the engine, transmission, and mechanical components is evaluated for potential operational or safety issues (e.g., engine warning lights).
Brakes: The braking system is tested to ensure optimal performance and safe stopping. Brake efficiency is also checked.
Suspension: The suspension system is inspected for any signs of wear or failure that could affect road handling or passenger comfort. This is done using a test bench.
Documentation and Compliance: Experts also check that the vehicle has all required documents, including the vehicle registration and conformity certificates according to current standards.
After the inspection, the vehicle receives a report with the inspection results. If any defects are found, the owner may be required to repair them before the vehicle can be retested and deemed compliant with safety standards.
