Parking damage : Definition and steps to follow

What is parking damage?

Parking damage refers to any damage sustained by a vehicle while it is parked and caused by an unknown third party. This can include scratches, dents, broken mirrors, or more serious impacts. The damage may be caused by another vehicle, a pedestrian, a shopping cart, or even weather conditions.

What to do in THE case of parking damage?

If you discover damage to your vehicle while it was parked, follow these steps:

  1. Check and document the damage: Inspect your car, take photos of the damage from different angles, and note key details such as the location, date, and time.

  2. Report the damage to your insurance: Contact your insurer as soon as possible; deadlines are set in your contract.

  3. Have your vehicle repaired: If your insurance covers the damage, they may refer you to a partner garage.

What insurance covers parking damage?

Coverage for parking damage depends on your car insurance policy:

  • Third-party liability only: Damage is only covered if the person responsible is identified. Their liability insurance will cover the cost.

  • Partial casco insurance: Only covers damage you did not cause, such as from natural events (hail, storms, etc.), animals, fire, theft, vandalism, or glass breakage.

  • Full casco insurance: Covers damage even if the perpetrator is not found or if you caused it yourself (usually with a deductible; mandatory for leased vehicles).

  • Parking insurance: Specifically covers damage caused by an unidentified person, often with a reduced or zero deductible.

How to avoid parking damage?

To minimize the risk of parking damage, consider these tips:

  • Choose strategic parking spots: Park away from crowded areas or in spots with less foot and vehicle traffic.

  • Use secured parking areas: Opt for monitored lots, ideally with cameras or a security guard.

  • Protect your vehicle: Use mirror, bumper, or door protectors to reduce the risk of impact.

  • Be mindful of surrounding vehicles: Avoid parking next to poorly parked or oversized vehicles that may cause damage while maneuvering.

  • Park within the lines: Ensure your car is well-aligned within the parking space to avoid accidental contact with others.

  • Consider parking damage insurance: Especially for newer or more expensive vehicles, taking out casco insurance can be a wise decision.
